Titlecard of ABS-CBN's COVID-19 coverage

Community quarantine is hereby imposed in the entire of Metro Manila

—Rodrigo Duterte

The COVID-19 pandemic, also known as the coronavirus pandemic began with an outbreak of a then-unknown cluster of pneumonia that emerged in the Chinese city of Wuhan in December 2019. In early 2020, it was revealed to be a novel strain of a coronavirus causing it. It would later spread to other parts of Asia, before spreading to other continents throughout early 2020. It was declared as a public health emergency of international concern on January 30, 2020 (the same day the Philippines confirmed its first case of the disease), and on March 11, 2020, it was assessed as a global pandemic.

In the Philippines, there were more than 4,000,000 total reported cases of the said virus and at least 66,000 deaths. The country confirmed its first case on January 30, 2020, which is a 38 year old Chinese woman who travelled from it's origin place of Wuhan. and its second case was later confirmed to be a 44 year old Chinese man, who was also the first person to die of the disease outside of Mainland China (it's country of origin). On March 2020, the country's local transmission of the disease began.

ABS-CBN began taking measures to mitigate the spread of the virus, following the declaration of the State of Public Health Emergency on March 9, 2020, which started with a temporary suspension of live audience admission in studio-based programs, followed by the suspension of entertainment program production (both narrative and non-narrative) upon the declaration of the community quarantines, until the community quarantine was downgraded to General Community Quarantine in June 2020, which allowed programs to resume production, provided health and safety protocols were followed during production of new content during the periods. However, with the network's free-to-air station being forced to go off-air on May 5, 2020, its programming moved to Kapamilya Channel and A2Z during the later part of 2020.

The pandemic would continue on in 2021, where shows continued to be taped under health and safety restrictions, with most digital interviews being conducted remotely via Zoom, as well as concerts being staged digitally. In March 2022, the severe phase of the pandemic ended, when the country was shifted down to Alert Level 1, and establishments that were closed by the pandemic were re-opened, as well as live audience being re-admitted in some ABS-CBN shows.

The World Health Organization declared an end to the public health emergency of international concern on COVID-19 on May 5, 2023, while the Philippines' state of public health emergency was lifted on July 22, 2023, officially ending the pandemic.

Impacts on ABS-CBN[]

Initial Responses[]

What’s up walang people!

It's Showtime hosts

ABS-CBN began taking up COVID-19 mitigation measures following the declaration of the State of Public Health Emergency on March 9, 2020, after a few local transmission cases of the disease was confirmed in the country.

The network began their COVID-19 mitigation measures by suspending the live studio audience admissions to their non-narrative studio programs, such as It's Showtime, ASAP Natin 'To (including its companion program iWant ASAP), Magandang Buhay and I Can See Your Voice. The suspensions took effect on March 10, 2020, when there were already a total of 24 COVID-19 cases in the country at that time, as well as the aforementioned State of Public Health Emergency declaration. However, ASAP wouldn't air it's first audience-less episode until June 14, 2020, as the first Sunday to air an episode after the emergency took effect, was March 15, 2020, the day the Community Quarantine took effect.

It's Showtime aired its first episode without a live audience on March 10, 2020, which notably featured SB19's first appearance on the show. The hosts used the greeting "What’s up walang people!" due to studio audience being prohibited.

Postponed premieres[]

Originally, Ang sa Iyo ay Akin was set to air on the second timeslot of Kapamilya Gold, replacing Sandugo, which would air its last episode on March 20, 2020, until its tapings were affected by the community quarantine restrictions. Its timeslot was later filled by reruns of Got to Believe. Eventually, the series premiered on August 17, 2020, taking the second slot of Primetime Bida that was last occupied by Make It with You, and later The World of a Married Couple.

Meanwhile, Everybody, Sing! was set to premiere on March 15, 2020, the day of the onset of the community quarantine. However, due to the said circumstances, the premiere was postponed, and its timeslot was filled by reruns of Gandang Gabi, Vice!, following the aforementioned show's finale episode the week before, which featured Raffy Tulfo as the guest.

Vice Ganda

Following the declaration of a community quarantine in Metro Manila on March 12, 2020, which took effect three days later, ABS-CBN suspended production of all of their entertainment shows , including taping of teleseryes and live stagings of in-studio narrative shows. The changes took effect on March 15, 2020, the day when the quarantine restrictions were implemented.

It's Showtime would also air its final live show on the day before the Community Quarantine took effect, with the hosts issuing a statement of the show suspending its live staging in compliance with the Community Quarantine restrictions. The Voice Teens'' second season would air its 11th and 12th episode without a live feed of The Voice Teens DigiTV, also in compliance with the preventative measures.

On the day the quarantine took effect (March 15, 2020), ASAP was originally scheduled to air a live episode, until the plans were scrapped due to the restrictions on mass gatherings already being implemented, although 24/7 and The Voice Teens (season 2) continued to air their fresh episodes. The supposed ASAP episode would have had birthday celebrations of Andrea Brillantes and Julia Barretto, as well as the cast of Sandugo appearing to promote the finale of their series. The original cast of Tabing Ilog: The Musical would have appeared with Barbie Almabis, as well as an ASAP Concert Presents prod of KZ Tandingan.

On March 16, 2020, the first weekday of the community quarantine, then ongoing Primetime Bida series Pamilya Ko, FPJ's Ang Probinsyano, Make it With You and A Soldier's Heart's airings were suspended, being replaced by reruns of 100 Days to Heaven, May Bukas Pa and On the Wings of Love, along with the iWant original series I Am U. However, Love Thy Woman continued to air 5 of it's fresh episodes, along with Sandugo's finale week on the first week of the community quarantine, despite having halted production in compliance with the guidelines, as the temporary programing block only affected Primetime Bida.

However, the following week, the entire Kapamilya Gold block suspended their airings on their respective timeslots, and they were occupied by reruns of The Legal Wife and Got to Believe Meanwhile, replays of It's Showtime was shortened to give way to reruns of Walang Hanggan.

The weekend programming was also affected, with Home Sweetie Home and 24/7 being replaced by re-runs of Wansapanatym, as well as the second season of The Voice Teens (despite having taped all of its episodes prior to the lockdowns) with a rerun of the first season of Your Face Sounds Familiar Kids, as well as Pilipinas Got Talent's 6th season being re-run on Sundays as well.

News delivery was also affected by the implementation of the enhanced community quarantine, which limited the workforce's newsgathering capabilities, with DZMM and ANC hooking up during the said period, the former's programing being aired on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, while the latter's programs being aired on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

During the said period, Bandila's airing was suspended due to the curfew which prevented people from going out at 8:00 PM to 5:00 AM, which also affected the network's newsgathering capabilities. Same-day replays of TV Patrol were aired on Bandila's timeslot instead.

Franchise shutdown era (May 2020)[]

In an unrelated matter, ABS-CBN's broadcast license was not renewed by its expiry date by Congress, and the company's free television and radio stations were hence forced off the air by the National Telecommunications Commission on May 5, 2020, to much domestic controversy and further worldwide attention when the European Parliament released a resolution that could lead to the revocation of GSP certifications of Filipino Products if the cases of journalist Maria Ressa were not dropped alongside the denial of the Philippine congress to grant ABS-CBN a fresh 25-year broadcasting franchise. The license revocation is believed to involve the network's critical news coverage of President Duterte's administration, along with overall inaction from the Congress of the Philippines to renew their broadcast license since the matter came up in 2016. Although the reason for the closure is not directly due to COVID-19, some figures have expressed concern about its impact on public efforts to contain the pandemic.

In a statement, ABS-CBN management said that "Millions of Filipinos will lose their source of news and entertainment when ABS-CBN is ordered to go off-air on TV and radio tonight (5 May 2020) when people need crucial and timely information as the nation deals with the COVID-19 pandemic".

General community quarantine era (June 2020-December 2020)[]

Following the downgrade to general community quarantine, protocols were implemented during the taping of programs, such as lock-in tapings, which would require artists to stay at a specific location, and billeted in hotels located near the taping area for the duration of the taping period.

As a result, non-narrative shows like It's Showtime or ASAP Natin 'To were still allowed to continue their production without a live studio audience and limited personnel, provided health and safety protocols were followed in the studio by the cast, staff and crew, as well as the online shows having to be done remotely via Zoom.

Due to the shutdown of the terrestrial Channel 2 as part of the cease-and-desist order, programs resumed instead through Kapamilya Channel, which was launched on June 13, 2020.

The Voice Teens' second season resumed immediately due to it's episodes being already taped before the community quarantine was declared, although the DigiTV hosts had to do their duties via remote work through Zoom as part of the COVID-19 restrictions.

Meanwhile, the finale of the second season of The Voice Teens had to be pre-recorded from the homes of the coaches and contestants due to the pandemic's restrictions, especially with teens under 21 not being allowed to leave their homes at that time due to the protocols, despite the entire season being taped before the quarantine.

From July 25-26, 2020, TV Patrol Weekend aired from the TeleRadyo booth after one of the staff tested positive for COVID-19, allowing the news studio to be disinfected. The news studio would be used again on the July 27, 2020 broadcast of TV Patrol, coinciding with its first simulcast on Kapamilya Channel. During this temporary measure, the TeleRadyo ticker was shown in both broadcasts of the said newscast.

Your Face Sounds Familiar (season 3)[]

Owing to the COVID-19 restrictions during the production of the season, the show implemented health and safety protocols to protect the cast, crew and staff from the threat of COVID-19, which was a pandemic at the time of the season. It entailed a lock-in taping set-up to produce three episodes per taping cycle in the studio, with no studio audience admitted inside the studio. Instead, the live audience was admitted virtually via Zoom with artificial crowd noise being used to simulate their presence, while Darren Espanto and AC Bonifacio hosted the KaFamiliar Online Live online companion show via Zoom.

Also, in March 2021, a surge of COVID-19 cases in the Greater Manila Area (NCR Plus) caused by the Alpha and Beta variants resulted in the re-implementation of the Enhanced community quarantine from March 29 to April 11, 2021, which caused the show to suspend it's taping of new episodes. A director's cut of previous weeks' episodes were aired on April 4, 10 and 11, 2021 respectively.

Following the lifting of the Enhanced community quarantine, the program resumed production, however, Jhong Hilario withdrew from the competition for the safety of his then-newborn baby, Sarina. At the time of his withdrawal on Week 7, he had 107 points, having won Weeks 1 and 2.

Also, Geneva Cruz had to miss the third cycle of taping, which covered Weeks 7, 8 and 9 due to being exposed to COVID-19, after her mother contracted the said disease and eventually died from it.

Alpha/Beta variant surge (March-April 2021)[]

Owing to a surge of COVID-19 cases in the country brought by the B.1.1.7 UK, later renamed Alpha by the World Health Organization as part of using Greek letters to name COVID-19 variants, the Greater Manila Area was placed under an Enhanced Community Quarantine to control the spread of the variant. The network would also take measures to combat the spread of the variant during the said ECQ period, the network paused tapings of the third season of Your Face Sounds Familiar, with replays of previous performances aired on April 4, 10 and 11, 2021. It's Showtime also aired replays during this period.

Delta Variant surge (August 2021)[]

On August 7, 2021, It's Showtime temporarily aired live from Hilton Clark Sun Valley Resort in Pampanga due to Metro Manila being placed under Enhanced community quarantine in light of another COVID-19 surge caused by the Delta Variant, until August 21, 2021.

Omicron variant surge (January 2022)[]

During the Omicron variant surge, and temporarily anchored TV Patrol

During the Omicron variant surge, Johnson Manabat and Pia Gutierrez temporarily anchored TV Patrol

At the start of January 2022, COVID-19 cases in the country surged due to the threat of the Omicron COVID-19 variant, which put the country at its record high of 39,004 COVID-19 cases. As a result, ABS-CBN had to make changes to certain shows of theirs as a result of the high amount of personnel who were infected with or exposed to a person who contracted the said variant of COVID-19.

During the said period, Johnson Manabat (on weekdays only) and Pia Gutierrez performed relief anchoring duties on TV Patrol from January 5-11, 2022, with Jorge Cariño also appearing from January 6-8, following the exposure of main anchors Bernadette Sembrano, Henry Omaga-Diaz and Zen Hernandez to a staff who contracted COVID-19, with Karen Davila and Alvin Elchico having tested positive for the disease. On January 9, Stanley Palisada filled in on TV Patrol Weekend.

Pinoy Big Brother: Kumunity Season 10 temporarily suspended its first adults edition from January 14 to January 18, 2022 as a precautionary measure to the surge of cases.

It's Showtime temporarily halted its live broadcast as a result of the staff that were infected with the Omicron COVID-19 variant. Its live stagings resumed on January 17, 2022.

Impact on live events[]

Most organizers postponed/cancelled their live events, such as live concerts, fanmeets, etc.... to prevent the spread of the virus after the a few cases were confirmed, even before the World Health Organization declared the outbreak a pandemic.

The Unified concert, a concert featuring Regine Velasquez and Sarah Geronimo would end up being one of the last few concerts to be staged before the outbreak became a pandemic, forcing large-scale live events to be cancelled to prevent the spread of the virus.

Tabing Ilog: The Musical would cancel its original run scheduled in March 2020 due to the health measures imposed at that time.

ABS-CBN Ball[]

There were no ABS-CBN Balls during 2020 and 2021, due to the restrictions on mass gatherings during those times, although the Ball would not return until 2023, when the aforementioned edition marked the return of the annual event.

ABS-CBN Christmas Special[]

The Christmas Special was staged live from the ABS-CBN Studios without any live audience admitted instead of being in Araneta Coliseum from 2020-2022 due to limitations on mass gatherings.

Salubong: The ABS-CBN New Year Countdown[]

The annual year-ender countdown of the network typically anchored by Adrian Ayalin and Pia Gutierrez was not aired for the countdown to 2021 and 2022 due to COVID-19 restrictions in the year leading to them. It would return for the countdown to 2023, after restrictions were eased in 2022.

Easing of restrictions[]

Starting in March 2022, when the country went down to Alert Level 1, full-scale live concerts were re-allowed in the country again, after being forced to halt operations due to the pandemic. Gigi de Lana's Domination concert was the first concert to be staged after the COVID-19 restrictions were lowered.

It's Showtime began re-admitting live audience on July 16, 2022, 2 years after suspending the admission of the live audience due to the pandemic, coinciding with its premiere on TV5.

ASAP 'Natin To began admitting it's live audience on February 2024, coinciding with it's 29th anniversary, roughly 4 years after the admission was suspended due to the health protocols.
