"Bro, Ikaw ang Star ng Pasko" is ABS-CBN's 2009 Christmas station ID. The song and station ID were recorded and produced on October 2009, and released and aired after TV Patrol World in November 4, 2009, the song is inspired by the popularity of the series May Bukas Pa and the challenges amid typhoons Ondoy (Ketsana) and Pepeng (Parma). Upon its release, the song and its station ID garnered positive reviews from audiences, and has been very popular during the Christmas season in the Philippines. It is widely considered the network's signature Christmas song.
The song has an acoustic version, performed by Aiza Seguerra, Carol Banawa, Juris, and Yeng Constantino.
Background[]
Shooting for ABS-CBN’s Christmas station ID was already underway when Typhoon Ondoy (Ketsana) struck the country, causing massive floods, particularly in Metro Manila and nearby areas. As a result, the creative team made changes. Robert Labayen stated that he had to "rewrite the lyrics and change the story because the country needed something inspiring after that tragedy." He also stated that he was "crying while writing the song on the roof deck."
Shooting for the station ID took seven days. Some scenes, including the opening, were shot in Brgy. Banaba, San Mateo, which was one of the areas affected by Typhoon Ondoy.[1]
Station ID[]
The station ID begins with a short message saying: "Dumaan man sa malakas na alon, lahat tayo ay makakaahon." Afterwards, it fades to a shot of glowing yellow, green, and red parols. A child picks up the parols, then sees military officers riding on their vehicle. The child salutes to the officers. Then the Kapamilya singers begin singing the song, as more parols continue to glow. Also in the video, ordinary Filipinos donate gifts to the victims of Typhoon Ondoy, and receive large parols from Kapamilya celebrities. During the chorus, the Kapamilya stars hold small star-shaped parols that resemble K-pop lightsticks, while singing along to the song. After the first chorus, ordinary Filipinos, such as the Sagip Kapamilya crew and the BMPM Boto Patrollers, show their parols in hand.
During the second verse and chorus, more ordinary Filipinos donate large parols to the church, which are brightening. After Sarah Geronimo's belting of the lyric "ang Star ng Pasko", it fades to a shot of Kapamilya child stars singing the line "Salamat sa liwanag mo, muling makakakulay ang Pasko" twice before cutting to various shots of the Kapamilya celebrities holding parol lightsticks. The station ID ends with a close-up of a kid holding a parol, then zooming out to reveal the other Filipinos, including Kapamilya celebrities, holding the parol lightsticks, then ending with the ABS-CBN jingle. In the extended version, the station ID ends with a shot of the Christmas campaign's official parols.
Lyrics[]
Kung kailan pinakamadilim
Mga mga tala ay mas nagniningning
Gaano man kakapal ang ulap
Sa likod nito ay may liwanag
Ang liwanag na ito'y
Nasa 'ting lahat
May sinag ang bawat pusong bukas
Sa init ng mga yakap
Maghihilom ang lahat ng sugat
Ang nagsindi nitong ilaw
Walang iba kundi ikaw
Salamat sa liwanag mo
Muling magkakakulay ang Pasko
Salamat sa liwanag mo
Muling magkakakulay ang Pasko
Tayo ang ilaw sa madilim na daan
Pagkakapit-bisig nagyon higpitan
Dumaan man sa malakas na alon
Lahat tayo'y makakaahon
Ang liwanag na ito'y
Nasa 'ting lahat
May sinag ang bawat pusong bukas
Sa init ng mga yakap
Maghihilom ang lahat ng sugat
Ang nagsindi nitong ilaw
Walang iba kundi ikaw
Salamat sa liwanag mo
Muling magkakakulay ang Pasko
Salamat sa liwanag mo
Muling magkakakulay ang Pasko
Kikislap ang pag-asa
Kahit kanino man
Dahil ikaw, Bro
Dahil ikaw, Bro
Dahil ikaw, Bro
Ang star ng Pasko
Salamat sa liwanag mo
Muling magkakakulay ang Pasko
Salamat sa liwanag mo
Muling magkakakulay ang Pasko
Ang nagsindi nitong ilaw
Walang iba kundi ikaw
Salamat sa liwanag mo
